Meet Michel.
Approaching retirement age in 2022, Michel sought a way to scale back from the traditional 8-10 hour workday. That’s when he set his sights on driving a school bus as his semi-retirement goal. But why a school bus, you ask?
“I enjoy driving long distances. I did a stretch for 6 months of transport driving in 2009 and the furthest point I had driven to was Texas. I decided to get on board with driving a school bus; but it was a new experience and the butterfly jitters were very real.
“It wasn’t until I had learned the route from reference points and civic addresses, to learning my student’s names in 4 weeks time, that it became easier to do my run.
“What I like about driving a school bus is the smiles. Every time the doors open, I have the opportunity to greet the students with a friendly word and a smile. The same thing happens when they disembark for the day or the weekend. An added bonus is getting to meet fellow drivers on PA Days, exchanging stories about our routes and lives. We all share something in common — a commitment to helping the next generation. The way I see it, I’m writing my own story and loving every minute.”
